Senate approval of a $1 billion highway maintenance and highway safety program for Mephisto Motors Inc. could be a key vote in the House of Representatives next week.
The House Ways and Means Committee approved the measure Wednesday by a vote of 12-7.
It also included $250 million for MECUM’s Mecumen Auto Auction.
The agency’s proposed program would provide funding to Mecumm to purchase vehicles and maintenance equipment needed to maintain and repair roads in rural and metropolitan areas and provide incentives to buyers to purchase cars and other equipment at lower prices.
Mecum has been under the control of the Department of Transportation since 2009.
In January, the agency said it had $1,600 million in assets in a trust for its operations.
The fund was set to be sold off in 2023.
The agency is expected to sell Mecums assets in 2019.
The highway program is intended to be a permanent fix for the nation’s roads.
